This afternoon we booked a special treat for ourselves and went to The Wellness Camp for a 4 hour "Marula Miracle Moments" experience, consisting of scrub and shower, calabash massage, wrap and steam, rasul treatment, spa lunch with wine, facial and pedicure. It was truly divine! The spa is located at another corner of the reserve and each of our treatment rooms overlooked a watering hole with hippos, storks, warthogs, and various other wildlife to look out onto. The steam room and shower were floor to ceiling glass looking out as well. We had a quick workout (thanks Kimber), prior to the treatments, which was awesome! Feeling it a bit today, though. We had the same therapists through the whole experience, and they were amazing! 4 hours is a very long time to be at the spa. We each fell asleep about 5 times, but not at the same time, so we were able to wake each other up. We've always wanted to do a full day at the spa, and this was the place to do it. It was supposed to be about $200 each, which is close to what we pay for 90 minute massage in Vancouver, so definitely a good value. But, the steam room kept cutting out, so they gave us a $100 discount, which is yet another sign of the outstanding service here at Kapama! The spa had a gorgeous infinity pool right down the centre and resting huts that were floating at each corner of the pool. Upon our departure with other guests returning to Southern Camp, we noticed a lightning storm moving in. Richard, another one of the rangers asked if we minded if he drove fast to try to avoid the storm. Considering they are open air vehicles, we had no objections. I felt like a scene out of Indiana Jones! We were hauling ass at about 100 km/h down bumpy safari roads. Suddenly, Richard hits the e-brake and we come to a hault. He jumps out, quickly grabs 4 ponchos and suddenly a river of rain is flowing down upon us. It was as if he knew exactly when the rain would start falling. Unfortunately, we didn't beat the storm. But, back in the jeep he jumps and we're quickly careening down the water filled roads, splashing through huge rivers and puddles, this time trying to get back before the lightning hit us. Whew - what a rush! We were soaked by the time we got back, but it was worth the experience!
Cam and I went to our room, put on dry clothes and received a message from management that they were upgrading us to a gorgeous suite! So, now we are in a suite overlooking another part of the reserve, have a massive room complete with separate shower, tub with windows that open and overlook the reserve, and separate double shower with rain head shower and groehe faucets (made me think of you, Maureen!). We have a French press coffee maker in our room together with a jar of biscotti (which we can't eat on our paleo diet!). When we got settled into our room, we discovered our bag of trail mix had been broken into. When we spoke to the staff about it later, they told us that room 7, our old room, was subject to bush babies, little beautiful monkeys. Apparently they have a little hole in the roof they sneak into and live in the rafters of room 7. So, likely our first night we were not alone. Hmmm...I thought I felt violated when I woke up (lol)! It didn't bother us, but would have been good to know before we lost a $20 bag of home-made, organic trail mix! Now, we have no snacks for our next safari, but we have a great story to tell!
Normally this would be the time we would go for our afternoon safari experience. But, given our rainy adventure, we elected to pass this time. Instead, we sat in the lounge hut, drank wine, and had a quiet afternoon. Everybody else had gone out for safari, so we had the place to ourselves. The bartender came over and lit a wood burning fireplace for us, while the monkeys snuck up and scared the crap out of me. One little baby monkey was about 2 feet away, about to steal my snack when I saw him and screamed, he screamed, the rest of the monkeys screamed and they all ran away, up the wall, and rested on the rafters staring at me like I was a madman! Too funny! It was quite romantic sitting by the fire, drinking wine, curling up on the couch and reminiscing about the day's events!
When you get home i am going to need more info about this place, it looks amazing! This is definately how I would do Africa!
